There are only a few musicians that have been able to blend Funk and Soul with passion, skill and flair equaling pure mastery. The New Age Funk Bride of Hip-Hop a.k.a. TRAEDONYA!, is now part of that few. With her soulful voice and energetic flair, this rising star is taking over the music charts with one beat at a time. SayWhatNews had the pleasure speaking with TRAEDONYA! about her sound and love for music:

SayWhatNews: Good morning TRAEDONYA! . Thanks for taking the time this morning and speaking with SayWhatNews. In 3 words tell us who is TRAEDONYA! ?

TRAEDONYA!: TRAEDONYA! , is energy, flair and skill!

SayWhatNews: I have to ask about your unique name, TRAEDONYA! Where did the name come from and what does it mean?

TRAEDONYA!: My mother gave me my name. My mother says that it means “woman of strength”. With all that I’ve seen on my journey, I agree with the meaning.

SayWhatNews: At what age did you discover your love for music and when did you decide to become an entertainer?

TRAEDONYA!: I was around seven when I announced that I wanted to be a performer. I was with my entire family that day, I remember it well. I was always put on the spot at family functions and told to “sing us a song”. At an early age, I was told to “do your thing, show us what you got”. I’m a showgirl by nature.

SayWhatNews: Who were your musical inspirations growing up?

TRAEDONYA! : I’ve always loved Chaka Khan, Grace Jones, Liza Minnelli, Cher and Donna Summer. All showgirls, that influenced me. I love the showmanship on stage, the clothing and the take charge attitude that they all have.

SayWhatNews: Do you play any instruments?

TRAEDONYA!: A little bit of piano, but mainly for writing purposes.

SayWhatNews: You come from a formal musical background. What type of professional training have you had?

TRAEDONYA!: Mainly Jazz. I studied at a Jazz conservatory in New York City. I learned the proper structure of a song, the counts in a bar and how to turn around to a band and tell them what key I’m singing the song in. I learned how to be a professional through Chico Hamilton. In class Chico Hamilton taught me how “not” to turn my back from the band too long and to always keep their attention. To make sure that the drummer and I always locked in, this will keep the band on point, for the most part. The drummer is the most important part of the band, he keeps the beat!

SayWhatNews: TRAEDONYA! , you have performed a lot over in Europe. Where do you most like to perform and why?

TRAEDONYA!: I love quite a few places. I love London and Ireland, simply because I love the people. I adore their club life and the fact that people that come out to your shows, really know who they are coming to see. They get into artists; they know the songs and know the lyrics.

SayWhatNews: Your music has been said to sound like a blend of the Mary Jane Girls and Chaka Khan. In your own words tells about your sound/music.

TRAEDONYA!: The TRAEDONYA! “Sound” consists of many things. My travels and what I’ve learned along my musical journey through living all over the place, shows through my music. I incorporate my many different loves in my music. I love all different types of music and that’s what comes through in my sound. I can’t be put in a box musically. I’m a musical peacock, many colors.

SayWhatNews: TRAEDONYA! , your single, “I’ll Give 2 U” has landed in the top 10 Indonesian Charts. How does it feel knowing music lovers are feeling your music around the world?

TRAEDONYA!: It feels great, especially when I get to travel and meet people in their locale that love them some TRAEDONYA! , it’s awesome! That was a surprise to me as far as the Indonesian chart goes, the song was in the charts for six weeks.

SayWhatNews: When can we expect an album?

TRAEDONYA!: This Winter, finally!

SayWhatNews: If you could dabble in another genre of music what would it be and why?

TRAEDONYA!: Country music, I love the stories. I love Vince Gill, Garth Brooks and Dixie Chicks. Their songs are provoking and their lyrics get inside of you. I really enjoy listing and chilling to it.

SayWhatNews: Do you like to write music/ produce?

TRAEDONYA!: I love to write. I’m pretty complex with the way that I think, so I write everything down. I find myself writing on brown paper bags sometimes, just so I can write my thoughts down quickly. Production, I love taking direction from a skilled producer, but I always add my input on the production side of songs.

SayWhatNews: Your fashion style is unique. What designers inspire your look?

TRAEDONYA!: Not many. I do a lot of vintage shopping and try to find individual pieces that are very different. When I work with a stylist, for the most part, I find that most stylists have music artists rocking the same gear, with the same look. In the music business, the fashion element is just as important as the music itself, unfortunately.

SayWhatNews: What hidden talents do you have that no one knows about?

TRAEDONYA!: I paint and draw in my free time. I love acrylics and water colors. That is how relax at home.

SayWhatNews: What’s next in the future for TRAEDONYA! ?

TRAEDONYA!: I have a new sponsorship through www.fanatic.fm , you’ll be hearing more about it this fall. I’ll also be working with my first charity through www.littlekidsrocks.org . It’s a very cool thing for me to assist with getting music into kids’ lives. I’m very excited to be a part of it!
