Gig Morton is a rising actor who is most definitely making his mark in the entertainment world. With six Young Artist nominations and a hit #1 TV show “Mr. Young”, gearing up for its second season on YTV/Disney XD; Morton is ready to take on Hollywood. SayWhatNews had the opportunity to talk one on one with Gig about his life in Canada, his interest and his hit TV show:

SayWhatNews: Good morning Gig. Thanks so much for interviewing with SayWhatNews. First tell us who is Gig Morton?

Gig: I am a professional young actor that currently works out of Vancouver. I love to act, dance, and sing. I currently play Derby on the YTV/Disney XD show Mr. Young.

SayWhatNews: I have to ask first about your cool name, is your first name really Gig or is it short for something?

Gig: Yes my first name really is Gig. I got my name from my Dad. His nickname is Gig. He got the name from his younger brother when they were little kids because his brother could not say “Gary” which is his real name. So when I was born my Dad decided to name me Gig. I really love my name. Gig is such a fun name and I have never met anyone else with it.

SayWhatNews: Let’s start from the beginning for our readers who are not familiar with your background. Do you have any siblings?

Gig: Yes I have three older sisters. They used to always dress me up in costumes when I was younger. No wonder I look so comfortable in all those crazy costumes on Mr. Young!

SayWhatNews: Aw so cute….the things sisters do to their younger brothers. You were born and raised in Canada; do you speak French/any other languages?

Gig: I have learned a little bit of French in school, but I am also very interested in Japanese and I’m currently learning to speak and write it.

SayWhatNews: How cool. So, growing up in Canada, did you live in the city or in the country?

Gig: Well I like to say that I lived in both because I grew up on Vancouver Island so I spent a lot of time on my friends’ farms. I also went to Vancouver a lot for auditions. Now I live in Vancouver doing Mr. Young.

SayWhatNews: What’s the most memorable thing you and your siblings did for fun?

Gig: My sisters and I would spend a lot of time watching movies and playing without dog. Those are very good memories.

SayWhatNews: I hear you also like to get into the recycling bin at home and build contraptions with cardboard tubes, egg cartons, newspaper and other things. What’s the coolest thing you ever built?

Gig: I once built a marble track with newspaper and cardboard. It was really fun to send the marble down and see what would happen, then adjust it so I could get it do something else with the marble.

SayWhatNews: At the age of 7 you performed in the production of The Wizard of OZ. What inspired you then to act?

Gig: My sisters were always participating in community theatre productions and my Mom asked me one day if I wanted to try being in a play. I wasn’t expecting to like it so much but it just ended up being so much fun!

SayWhatNews: The acting bug still had a hold of you because at age 9 you were cast in your first film, Walt Disney’s “Air Buddies”. How did you hear about that role?

Gig: After doing a play in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island I was introduced to an agency in Vancouver and I got to sign with them. After that I just started auditioning and I was lucky enough to get the role on “Air Buddies” within my first few months of auditioning for film and TV.

SayWhatNews: “Air Buddies” was a smash it. How amazing was it that you starred in all four “Air Buddies” films as the character “Billy”?

Gig: It was really awesome to be in the first four of the “Buddies” franchise. I was also the only kid that was consecutively in the first four.

SayWhatNews: Gig you have appeared on several hit TV shows like USA’s “Psych”, Syfy’s “Eureka”, CW’s “Reaper” and more; between film and TV, which do you find to be more of a challenge and why?

Gig: Between the two I would probably say TV, because there is a lot research needed to be done on the storyline and the characters. When getting a guest role on a show I could be joining into a storyline that is already fully developed. So, it is very important to fully understand what is going on in the series.

SayWhatNews: In 2011, you were cast in the hit YTV comedy series, “Mr. Young” as “Derby”. Did you have to audition? Tell us about the experience (was there a call back/how many actors were you up against)?

Gig: For Mr. Young I actually started the audition process in the running for the character “Adam” and I got up to the top ten. I had about two or three call backs. Then I was asked to try for Adam’s best friend “Derby”. I got two call backs including the chemistry read I had with Brendan Meyer who was being considered for the role of “Adam”.

SayWhatNews: Your character “Derby” is a self-proclaimed Don-Juan. What characteristics of yourself do you bring to “Derby”?

Gig: I would say I bring the crazy and random energy to “Derby”; most of the time he has his own crazy plan to go along with everything else that is going on. I find that my training with improvising has really helped me with the character even though everything is rehearsed and planned ahead of time.

SayWhatNews: “Mr. Young” is in its second season and just recently was picked up by Disney XD. How exciting was it for you to learn that your #1 show was getting an even broader audience?

Gig: I think that it is amazing to be seen around the world. I have always had a passion for making people laugh. Being able to share that with so many people is just a fantastic feeling.

SayWhatNews: “Mr. Young” is taped in front of a live studio audience. What’s that like?

Gig: This is always my favorite part of my job. With my back-round in theatre I have always felt pretty comfortable in front of an audience. Having people there to genuinely react to the jokes is always a great feeling especially when people are still laughing after 5 or 6 takes of the scene.

SayWhatNews: In 2009 and 2010, you were nominated for your craft by the Young Artist Awards. How rewarding was it for you to receive such recognition?

Gig: It was very cool knowing people had seen my acting and appreciated my work.

SayWhatNews: Gig you have worked with some amazing talent like Nicole Eggert, Lou Diamond Phillips and Nicole de Boer. Is there any other actor/actress you would love to act with and why?

Gig: My dream has always been to work with Jim Carrey. I have always thought he was hilarious and I really enjoy watching him.

SayWhatNews: In your free time you study guitar, tap dancing, ballet, hip-hop, musical theatre and singing. Why is it so important for you as an artist to polish your craft?

Gig: I have always felt that it is important to be able to bring everything to the table when I’m acting. Having extra skills like dancing is always a good thing to have.

SayWhatNews: I also hear you have a passion for Science, especially Astronomy. What is the coolest thing you have seen through your telescope?

Gig: I have seen both Jupiter and Saturn. My favorite thing to look at with my telescope is still the Moon, because it is the closest thing to Earth and I can see a lot of detail with my telescope.

SayWhatNews: What’s next in the future for Gig Morton?

Gig: I am currently training and improving my skills and auditioning whenever I have the time. I am hoping more big things will be coming my way in the future.
