Many have described Janis Leahy voice as the sound of an angel. With the techno beats in the background as she sings, you become immersed into a feeling as if you are floating in space. I had never really sat and listened to Electronica music until I came across this talented singer on Myspace.
Janis’s sound completely opened my ears to the Electronica music. I had heard house music and techno music before (in the club) but never really took the time to consider listening to it (allowing it to soak in and not just be noise in the background) until I listened to Janis Leahy. She is not only a beautiful lady with an angelic voice; she is a song writer and is trained in dance from ballet to jazz. So keep a look out for this shining star because Janis Leahy is on her way to the top.
SayWhatNews: Hey Janis, thanks for taking a moment and speaking with us. Let’s just dive right in. Your mom Evelyn Leahy was a successful singer who toured the Orient. Tell us what it was like growing up in the music industry.
Janis: No problem, my pleasure. My mom had actually retired from the music industry by the time I came around. But she has some pretty incredible photo albums and pix around the house from when she toured, so that always made for good conversation.
SayWhatNews: Besides your mom, who were your musical influences growing up?
Janis: My dad too! He’s classically trained in music and plays piano, so when I was little, he’d play piano while I’d sing show tunes. But besides my parents, I was influenced by Pat Benatar, Cindy Lauper, The Cars, and Nat King Cole.
SayWhatNews: At what age did you realize your passion for music (singing and song writing)?
Janis: I started singing pretty much when I figured out how to make noise. While my parents encouraged it, they encouraged school more, so after I moved out when I was 18, I decided I wanted to pursue it as a career… I still consider myself a rookie in the song-writing department, but it seems to be going ok so far.
SayWhatNews: When did you discover electronic music? What artist influenced your love of the music?
Janis: Around the time I turned 19, some friends of mine took me to a DC party called “Buzz” and I loved it. And while there were a TON of artists capturing my attention, BT and Underworld were the two that I can remember really standing out.
SayWhatNews: How did you meet Ali ‘Dubfire’ Shirazinia of the Grammy Award winning duo Deep Dish?
Janis: A good friend of mine worked for his lawyer, so he introduced us at one of their gigs. I told Ali I was a singer, we exchanged contact info, and I ended up in the studio with them a few weeks later.
SayWhatNews: Tell us about how Stevie Nicks ended up adding vocals to yours and Deep Dish rendition of Stevie Nick’s song “Dreams”.
Janis: Ali gave me the instrumental track to write something original to, but all I heard were the lyrics to “Dreams.” Ali and Sharam loved the idea, so I set down vocals in the studio, and her lyrics and their track sounded great together. Then their management wanted to see if Stevie would do it. She listened to it and loved it, so she did a new vocal for them. Rightfully so, as it is her song and she belongs on it.
SayWhatNews: How did it feel learning of the great success of your single “Twilight”?
Janis: I was thrilled when it got released, so I could point people in a direction when they asked me where they could get my music. That was the great success for me, and hopefully it’ll continue to do well.
SayWhatNews: Armada Music featured your song “Shoudda Been There” on the Armada Vocal Trance Hits Vol. 6. What an accomplishment; what went through your mind when you learned they wanted to feature your song on that album?
Janis: HOW COOL! It’s always flattering when someone like Armin Van Buuren supports you, but of course I really want to reach out to as many people as I can with my music, so this was a great opportunity to do so.
SayWhatNews: So, when can we expect an album?
Janis: Next week! Ha… don’t I wish. I could say a year from now, but really, it comes down to how lucky I get. Being able to lay down enough tracks and get support from a record label is not the easiest thing to do, but I’m up for it and going after the challenge. In the meantime I’ll keep the singles coming.
SayWhatNews: Do you want to get signed with a Major Label or Independent?
Janis: I don’t know that I’d be too picky, especially with the way the music market is going… There’s perks to both, but I just want to be with a label who believes in my work and in turn, they work hard on getting it out there.
SayWhatNews: Besides singing and song writing, do you play any instruments?
Janis: Not well enough to promote it! I have a guitar that I try to play, but I’m not very good at it.
SayWhatNews: Would you ever sing a different genre of music, for instance Pop or R&B?
Janis: As a matter of fact, I’m working on a more pop sounding track with a producer named Quixotic. He does some really cool stuff, and we have great chemistry in the studio.
SayWhatNews: Which artist would you love to collaborate with and why?
Janis: Sultan. Sultan. Sultan. Everything he does has SO much life behind it, and it’s all so sexy.
SayWhatNews: Ok Janis, what CD is currently playing in your car?
Janis: My iPod is plugged in, and it’s on random, but I think the last song I heard it play in my car was “With or Without You” by U2.
SayWhatNews: What was the last movie you went to go see at the cinema?
Janis: “Superbad.” Awesome.
SayWhatNews: In your spare time what do you like to do for fun?
Janis: Spend time with my loved ones… whether it’s eating, drinking, dancing or just sitting around cracking up, whenever I have a friend or two around, life is good. I wish I could spend more time with my family, but they’re out in CA so I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like to.
SayWhatNews: Have you experienced any crazy encounters with fans whether in person or even online?
Janis: No, not at all. I get emails from people all over the world, which is so amazing to me… and while they’re not always easy to read b/c of language barriers, I’ve been very fortunate to get nothing but great compliments and tons of support.
SayWhatNews: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Janis: Barefoot and pregnant, of course! Honestly though, I have no idea. Hopefully I’ll have released an album or two and traveled the world a little more.
SayWhatNews: For all your male fans out there, are you single? If so, what kind of guy are you interested in?
Janis: I doubt anyone is interested in my personal life … but whenever I am single, I look for someone who is sure of themselves and wants the same things in life that I do. And most important, they have to have a heart of gold. I don’t mesh well with mean people.
SayWhatNews: Tell us something about Janis that we don’t know.
Janis: I’m a trained dancer – ballet, jazz, and lyrical. And I broke my right elbow jumping on a trampoline when I was 11.
SayWhatNews: What’s in the future for Janis Leahy?
Janis: I'm working on a few tour dates, so keep checking my website and myspace for updates.
SayWhatNews: Thanks again for taking the time and speaking with SayWhatNews.
Janis: Thank you!
