Hip-Hop is more than just music. Its a way of life, a way of thinking, a way of believing and a movement. Two young men discovered their love for this powerful genre of music and used it as way to spread their own joy and positive beliefs. SayWhatNews sat down and spoke with one half of La Swagga to get to know them and their music:
SayWhatNews: Hello Marcel, thanks so much for waking up early this morning and speaking with SayWhatNews. Tell us who is Marcel Hatter?
Marcel: Marcel Hatter a.k.a Swagg is a up and coming great artist sure to put a big foot print in the music industry, a leader , a entrepreneur, an Idealist, a humble and charismatic guy, a man who walks more then he talks, a man that never gives up no matter what the odds are against him, the true definition of Swagg!
SayWhatNews: How long have you been in the music industry?
Marcel: I have been rapping and doing shows for 6 years. The day I started recording was the first day I started rapping and taking it seriously.
SayWhatNews: Who was your musical influence growing up that inspired you to join the music business?
Marcel: Well, first off, the first rapper I've ever heard in my life was Jay-Z in the song 'Ain't No N****' featuring Foxy Brown. The moment after I heard that song I became a Hip- Hop head. The artist that really inspired me after that were A Tribe Called Quest, Pharcyde, Nas, Method Man and Redman, Warren G, Snoop Dogg, Pharrell, Common, N.E.R.D, Timbaland & Magoo, Missy Elliot, De La Soul, the Beatie Boys, OutKast and the Dungeon Family, Hi-Tek and another big one for me is Busta Rhymes.
SayWhatNews: Wow, that's a long list but each in their own right are great talents. Now, Marcel you are not just a Hip-Hop Artist, song-writer and producer. You are also a promoter for La Swagga Music Group. Tell us about La Swagga Music Group.
Marcel: La Swagga consist of two artist: Swagg (which is me) and L.A. White( Leland White), we are a duo. We have done over 400 shows, 3 tours and were apart of Tech N9ne's tours. We have opened up and performed next to 15 platinum selling artists; we have opened up at Kube 93's Summer Jam in 2010; we have performed at Seattle Fashion week 2010 and we released two albums.
We did all of this in two and a half years with no publicist or manager. I feel we are the perfect definition of do it yourself. We make music for everybody no limits or restrictions. We have essence in our music, there is no cursing or N bombs in our music. We have performed at charities to the slums and we always get the same response and that is the crowd going crazy and rocking with us. I love it!
SayWhatNews: Sounds like you guys have been busy doing your thing. I see La Swagga's first album dropped back in 2009. Have you been working on any new projects?
Marcel: Yes, we dropped our second album June 10th, 2010 and now we are working on solo mix-tapes and La Swagga mix-tape. I am also working on a solo EP as well. This Summer to next Fall is going to be crazy.
SayWhatNews: Introduce us to La Swagga and tell us something about each member.
Marcel: I am a music head till the day I die. I don't know what it is but I research musical artist all the time good or bad from country to rap, I read about them all. People call my phone all the time asking me questions about artists of all kinds. Its funny!
L.A. White is a very creative person. He looks at songs or beats totally different then anyone I have worked with in this game.
SayWhatNews: Is there anyone you would love to collaborate with and why?
Marcel: Wow!! There are so many to choose from...... I would love to collab with Jay-Z because he makes classic music. I would also love to collab with Timbaland & Magoo, Busta Rhymes and Hi-Tek because I know for a fact that it would bring me to whole other level. I would spit the most legendary verse ever! In my age bracket right now my 3 would be J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Cyhi da Prynce because our different styles would melt together to make great songs.
SayWhatNews: What should your fans expect when they come and see you perform?
Marcel: The best performance they have ever seen in there entire life. We bring passion, emotion, and greatness to the stage. We get the crowd involved and going wild. I have toured in places that I thought wouldn't accept us at all but as soon as we hit the stage it was one of the greatest feelings I could ever have. Turning a place that doesn't know you into people that love you, your music and what you represent.
SayWhatNews: La Swagga has toured from WA to ATL. Would you ever consider going on tour in Europe?
Marcel: In a heart beat! That is one of my dreams is to tour all over Europe, Asian, Africa, and the Caribbean! That would be a blessing.
SayWhatNews: What sets La Swagga apart from other Hip-Hop groups/artists?
Marcel: Well, first off we do not curse or throw out N bombs or talk derogatory about females at all. We uplift how we were raised and our families beliefs. We show you do not have to be all serious, wild, and hardcore just to do music or get your point across. Just be yourself no matter what's going on. Another big factor is that we do not have a manager or publicist. We take a bad situation and turn it into a great one by being driven, working hard, and staying focused.
SayWhatNews: What's next for Marcel Hatter and La Swagga?
Marcel: For Marcel, it is dropping a solo mix-tape titled 'Spazzin Out Vol.1' hosted by Dj Contagious and also dropping a solo EP titled 'InterMind Transit'. As for La Swagga we are working on a mix-tape together and a new album and trying to get overseas and back on tour.
BTW: The name of our duo is La Swagga. Say it like one word LaSwagga. lol My name is Swagg his name is L.A. together we are La Swagga
