Character description (by DirecTV)Tom’s job has become the very essence of who he is: a dedicated high school teacher. He’s calm, quiet, and patient—a devoted father. SayWhatNews went One on One with Kavan Smith about his new role and much more. Here is a snippet:

SayWhatNews: Your latest project is starring in DirecTV’s much anticipated new crime drama series, Rogue which just premiered on April 3rd.  Tell us what TV audiences can expect to see when watching DirecTV’s first scripted program?

Kavan: I hope that what they’ll see is a raw visceral exciting crime drama. Something unlike what’s out there right now. It’s something that really pushes the envelope…..a real family thrown into a horrific situation amid very dangerous and desperate people. I hope above all that the story grabs people and pulls them in.

SayWhatNews:  Kavan, your character Tom Travis, is a dedicated high school teacher who is married to the very talented actress Thandie Newton, who plays your wife Grace. The couple just recently lost their son Sam and find themselves grieving in different ways which puts a strain on the marriage.  How did you prepare for this role?

Kavan: I have kids of my own and the idea of losing one is terrifying. I found it somewhat easy to slide into this guy. He is a father trying to hold his family together. I was raised by a single father. It fit for me. Thandie was so great to work with. She made it easy for me to go for things. I really appreciated that from her.

Kelly Rowland in Negotiations to Join Fox's X-Factor as Judge

Fox’s The X Factor is looking to have plenty of girl power next fall. The judges panel will likely consist of executive producer Simon Cowell and three female judges.

One will be returning judge Demi Lovato, as the network previously announced. If all goes according to plan, another will be singer, dancer and Super Bowl halftime show-stopper Kelly Rowland. The Grammy-winning Destiny’s Child founding member has previously been floated as a potential judge in the press, but EW can exclusively report she’s firming up a deal to join the show. Rowland should feel quite comfortable at the judges table; she has extensive on-camera experience, from serving as a judge on the eighth season of the UK version of The X Factor to performing on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance.

We’re not certain who will secure the third judge spot, though we’re hearing Latin singer-actress Paulina Rubio is in talks.

The deals will have to be completed soon — The X Factor starts production on season three on Tuesday. The new judges will replace season two panelists Britney Spears and L.A. Reid.

Actress Nia Long is a busy woman these days.  She graces the cover of Jet Magazine just as her new film Best Man Holiday starts production. Its been 15 years since the box office hit Best Man hit the screen and now fans are looking forward to part 2.  Long discusses the movie in her interview with Jet:

JET:  Everyone’s buzzing about you reprising the role of Jordan in The Best Man Holiday (out November 15). The original was definitely a classic film— but it’s been almost 15 years. Why do a sequel now?

We made magic together— so many people say that to me. And because I love the cast. The film’s director, Malcolm Lee, has been talking about it for some time and finally announced his plan during a recent cast reunion dinner.

JET: Any details you can dish on the movie?

Well, we’re not shooting until late April in Toronto so I can’t say much, but everybody is really excited to revisit our stories and find out what happens next. Where is Jordan now? Did she get married? Did she break up a relationship? It’s like reading a great book; you want to see what the next chapter is.

Best Man Holiday News: Actress Sanaa Lathan has tried to satiate our thirst for the upcoming Best Man sequel, The Best Man Holiday, by posting several behind-the-scenes photos from filming on her Instagram page.
