There is not a lot you can say about a man with a vision who has the ambition and drive to make it happen except for, “watch out because he is on his way to making his vision a reality”. Torrian Ferguson had a vision of becoming a successful author; he made it happen. Now he is working on taking his radio talk show to the next level and that too shall happen. He is a man who believes in himself and dreams outside the box. That makes him a powerful visionary on the road to embark on true success.
SayWhatNews: Good morning Torrian. It is a pleasure speaking with today. Tell SayWhatNews who is Torrian Ferguson?
Torrian: I am the Host of the most talked about radio show on the Internet. The name of my show is The Ferguson Literary Hour Radio Show and it can be heard every Tuesday night at 7pm EST on www.artistfirst.com. I’m also the Essence Magazine best-selling author of Swingers and Scandalous.
SayWhatNews: Where did you grow up?
Torrian: I was born and raised in the most beautiful place on earth. Miami, Florida. I currently live in Greensboro, North Carolina with my wife Chalonda and our two children.
SayWhatNews: Did you enjoy reading as a child? If so, what was your favorite book?
Torrian: I was not a big reader as a child. But when I did read I liked the books where you had to pick how the book went. Kinda like the reader was able to choose what happened next in the story type of books.
SayWhatNews: How did a classically trained chef become an Essence Magazine Best Selling Author?
Torrian: After Leaving Johnson and Wales University I worked in several 4&5 star hotels. The hours were horrible and days off were rare. When I did have time to myself all I wanted to do was sit on the sofa and either watch ESPN or read some magazine. One day my wife left her book God’s Gift to Women on the sofa. I picked it up and started to read it. I sat and read that book all day. When I finished I thought that I can tell a story like that.
So, I sat down to the computer and started writing a story about a few friends of mine that was in the swinging lifestyle. From there the story just came to me and every moment I had I was writing. I sent the manuscript to a few small publishers and got picked up and within 6 months of my first book hitting the shelves I was on the Essence list. To be honest I didn’t even know Essence had a list until about 3 months before I made it.
SayWhatNews: Do you still cook professionally?
Torrian: Not anymore. I’m on the management side of it now. But I can still hold it down if I have to.
SayWhatNews: What was your inspiration for writing “Swingers” and “Scandalous”?
Torrian: I have a few friends that are into the swinging lifestyle that almost lost everything behind it. It was their story that I told. Of course I changed a lot of things but the story is just about right on. As for Scandalous, I’m a huge “who done it” fan. I love the movie Clue and things like that. I had the opportunity to write a book in the style that I like so I went with it and it worked.
SayWhatNews: You currently have a popular radio show “The Ferguson Literary Hour Radio Show” with artistfirst.com. How did the show come about?
Torrian: I did an interview with one of the stations DJ’s. About a week after the show they called me and said that my interview was being downloaded a lot and they offered me my own show because I was saying things that people wanted to hear. I said I was not interested and that was that.
About a week later they called me again and told me pretty much the same thing. This time I thought about it and decided to do it. I figured it would be a good hobby to have but little did I know it would blow up the way that it did. I went from doing a straight hour of talking to one author to talking to 3 authors in an hour. We now have professional commercials and radio drops. We have a great show.
SayWhatNews: On your show you feature new authors that would not normally get the chance to be heard. Tell us why you decided to take that route.
Torrian: I was one of those authors. I know what it’s like to try to get on drive time radio and not a single station will give you an opportunity to talk. I’ve walked that road. So when I was presented with the opportunity to do my show I knew I wanted to give new authors a voice. So I decided to couple new authors with well seasoned authors to help get more people to listen to the new authors. It’s been working very well. The entire purpose of the show is to give authors a voice to be heard.
SayWhatNews: Has their ever been a shocking moment on the show? If so tell us what happened.
Torrian: I did an interview with Pam Pinnock, author of “The Father Fracture”. The book is about abused women. During the interview I asked why is it that most women that are beautiful and sexy always seem to find the dude that’s the bad apple in the bunch. Her response was “Do you think I’m beautiful?” My response was “huh”. And this was live! She was trying to make a very good point about how women that are abused don’t feel beautiful. But the way she asked me shocked me. I was thinking oh my God my wife is going to trip about this one. But she didn’t it was cool.
SayWhatNews: One of your featured authors was Karrine Steffans the former video vixen who went on to write a tell-all book about her sexual encounters with some of Hip-Hops most famous rappers. Why did you choose to feature her book with all the negative controversy surrounding the book?
Torrian: I wanted to have her on the show because her book was hot at the time. Everyone had her on their show and she took time out of doing all the huge nationally syndicated shows to do The Ferguson Literary Hour. That was huge for us. I have nothing but respect for Karrine. I treated her with respect and asked her only about her book and we had a great conversation.
SayWhatNews: The show started in June of 2007; where do you see the show in 5 years?
Torrian: The plan is to have the show syndicated. I’m very close to achieving that goal already. I just need to work a few things out, but that should happen by the summer of 2008. I would like to also take my publicist company The Ferguson Literary Group to the next level. Right now I mostly work with new authors and I love doing that but I think I’m going to take on other projects in the very near future. I’ve put myself in a great position with people that are very successful in the music and literary industries and I look forward to taking my company to the next level.
SayWhatNews: Do you plan on writing any more books in the future?
Torrian: Yes. Brian Smith author of “The S.W.A.P. Game” and I are working on a novel right now that is going to set readers on fire next summer. I’m taking the main couple from my debut novel “Swingers” and he is taking his main couple from “The S.W.A.P. Game” and bringing them together. The name of the book will be “The Final Fling”. It’s scheduled for release June 15, 2008. We are also giving away a free American Airlines tickets to anywhere in the lower 48 states to one lucky reader, when the book is released. “The Final Fling” is going to be a hot, steamy, sexy, erotic read that will make a hot summer even hotter.
SayWhatNews: If you decided to write your Autobiography what would be the title?
Torrian: Diaries of A Fat Black Man. The reason I would choose that title is because I recently lost over 150 pounds and I feel great. I went through a lot being overweight. Some pretty funny stuff actually.
SayWhatNews: What do you like to do in your spare time?
Torrian: Anytime I can sit and watched my beloved Miami Dolphins or University of Miami Hurricanes that’s always a great day. I love to bake cookies. I guess that’s why I was fat. But what I really love to do is play with my kids. I have 2 kids that live with me and they are my pride and joy. I have another son that lives in Florida and I love to spend time with him when I can.
SayWhatNews: Tell us something about yourself no one knows.
Torrian: Something about me that people don’t know is that I’m a huge Harry Potter fan. I love the books and the movies. I go see the movies on opening day every time a new movie is released.
SayWhatNews: What’s in the future for Torrian Ferguson?
Torrian: I want to take my show and publicist company to the next level. I want to keep interviewing new authors and giving them a voice. I would like to help as many authors as I can find their way through this maze called the literary industry.
