R&B music today is missing the substance and soul that it once was. So many artists claim the genre but really never touch the surface of Rhythm & Blues. Singer Vin Keatin with his sensual/ soulful voice is bringing back classic R&B with a touch of new. SayWhatNews went in deep to the bedroom (studio) of Vin Keatin to get to know him and his new style of music, ‘R&B Revolution’:
SayWhatNews: Good morning Vin. Its such a pleasure to speak with you this morning. Please tell us who is Vin Keatin?
Vin: I am Vin Keatin, aka Mr. Baby Making Music, the captain of the new R&B revolution.
SayWhatNews: Vin you have a sensual voice, when did you first realize you had the gift of song?
Vin: I've been singing since I was six. I didn't really realize it until about 14.
SayWhatNews: Have you had any professional training?
Vin: I've been taking voice lessons for the last six years; my coach Robin Small who's a phenomenal coach and singer.
SayWhatNews: Growing up in the Bronx, New York, who were your musical influences?
Vin: Well my musical influences were crafted from my older sister's huge R&B collection. She had R. Kelly, Joe, Baby Face, Brian McKnight and all the other huge R&B artists of the 90s. When I got older I listened to the forefathers of R&B like Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson. I'm an R&B gumbo.
SayWhatNews: That is a nice array of soulful voices to be influenced by, I see why you voice is so reminisces of classic R&B. Now Vin, I read that you had a severe case of stage freight. How did you over come it?
Vin: Well it was really my close friends who helped me get over it. I wanted to do my high school talent show and each year I would let it pass. My boy just said you’re a senior, so it’s now or never. I got up the courage to do it. After I auditioned girls were crying and now we’re here.
SayWhatNews: Ok, so the girls crying kicked it all together, lol!! When did you decide to make your music professionally?
Vin: After I did my high school talent show I got a standing ovation. I said to myself this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.
SayWhatNews: Your debut album “Certified” was just recently released. What can music lovers expect from this body of work?
Vin: They can expect a throwback to the old R&B, but a blend of the new. It’s straight bedroom music.
SayWhatNews: Vin, who did you collaborate with on this album from producers to song-writers?
Vin: Well I co-wrote or wrote every song on the EP except for the first song “O.D on U” which was written by Dre Holmes, a great songwriter. Production was in-house for every song except for “O.D in U” which was produced by Playboi Chi and “In My Head” which was produced by Gil Small.
SayWhatNews: I’m really feeling your song “Baby Making Music”, what inspired this song?
Vin: We felt there was nothing out like it and we like to go against what everybody else is doing. The track just gave that vibe.
SayWhatNews: Your style of music has been compared to classic R&B blended with a touch of new to create your own brand of love making music. What inspires your style and music and the way you create?
Vin: Really I grew up on the greats but my voice coach always told me nobody wants an imitation so I just tried to take a little of all my influences and me.
SayWhatNews: Well, I must say a job well done. We most definitely like your style/sound. Do you have any plans to take it on the road?
Vin: We do but everything happens when it is supposed to. I can't wait to bring the ladies inside my bedroom.
SayWhatNews: Is there anyone you would love to collaborate with and why?
Vin: I would love to write a song for R. Kelly, he's a huge part of who I am musically.
SayWhatNews: Besides singing, do you have any other talents like playing an instrument?
Vin: No not yet but I will very soon. A lot of times I create songs without music. So it would really help that process.
SayWhatNews: Which female singer would you love to do an duet with and why?
Vin: There's so much but if I had to narrow it down, it would be Brandy or Jazmine Sullivan. I love Brandy's tone control; everything about her voice. Jazmine Sullivan for the same reason - there just both great vocalists it would be an honor to work with them.
SayWhatNews: Please tell us something about yourself that no one knows?
Vin: I can sing classical music.
SayWhatNews: In your spare time what do you like to do for fun?
Vin: There is no spare time right now. When I do have time I spend it with family.
